Establishing an audience is important for a blogger who wants to make money from blogging. But keeping your audience, well that’s the hard part! How many people have you had follow you on Instagram, just to unfollow you a couple hours later? It’s infuriating! So how do you keep your blog audience engaged and wanting to keep following you? Well, producing good content is of course an obvious part of that answer. But hopefully we are all doing that anyway. So let’s talk about a few things that will help your audience stay your audience.
Find Your Niche
Hopefully you already chose your niche before even starting your blog. If not, you may be wondering what a niche even is? A niche is basically the subject that you will be writing about. For example, my niche is travel, family travel, and photography. Others may blog about recipes or fitness. Your blog needs to have a niche in order to be successful. Your niche should be specific, but not too specific, in order to attract a large amount of followers. You can choose a couple areas to cover in your blog, but they should be related, and don’t just choose a bunch of random things to talk about that have nothing to do with each other. That will just confuse your audience.
I mostly blog about travel, family travel, and travel photography. So travel is my main focus, and then I break it down into a few categories. So my audience is mostly those who love to travel, travel with their kids, or love to take photographs as they travel. My audience knows what to expect from my blog and that is why they keep following me. If I were to suddenly start writing about fitness or food, my audience would get confused and probably stop following me, as that is not what they are interested in.
So when choosing your niche, first think about what you know, do, love, or are good at. Then break it down into categories if needed. Don’t choose multiple niches that are unrelated, like blogging about fitness, travel, and makeup tutorials. It will be much harder to find a following if your readers do not know what to expect from you.
E-Mail Lists
E-mail lists are very important for bloggers. Sending personal e-mails to your audience helps them know you as a person, not just a blog, and keeps them engaged. We use Constant Contact for our e-mail service and we absolutely love it!

How to Get Subscribers
Okay, so you have started an e-mail list, but do you have any subscribers yet? You might be wondering how to get people to actually JOIN your e-mail list! Well, the easiest way is to offer them something they want, and do it for FREE! This can be in the form a printable, a course, a checklist, or anything else that you can think of that you can offer your subscribers for signing up for your e-mail list. For example, I offer my subscribers who sign up for my travel e-mail list a free travel budget calculator. For those who sign up for my camper van e-mail list, I offer a free camper van packing checklist. And for those who sign up for my photography e-mail list, I have a free 5-day e-mail photography course! These can all be set up through Constant Contact to automatically send the freebies to your subscribers when they sign up for a certain e-mail list on your blog.
So think about what you could possibly offer, and use that as an enticement to get your audience to subscribe to your blog! Another fun way to get subscribers is to do a giveaway. I recently promoted a giveaway for two road trip books. Those who entered had to subscribe to my blog as well as follow two of my social media sites in order to qualify as an entry. If you’re giving something away for free, people will definitely be interested! Constant Contact makes all of this really easy to set up.
