Belize… The Perfect Tropical Getaway

Spread the love

Our trip to Belize was absolutely magical.  We found the perfect little island to stay on called Coco Plum.  Coco Plum Cay was so private and full of charm.  There were only 12 cabanas on the adult-only island, so it was very quiet and relaxing, and we felt like we had the island to ourselves!  The staff was also very friendly.

The water surrounding the island was crystal clear, the perfect temperature, and filled with sea life.  The snorkeling was fantastic, and the resort provided kayaks and snorkel equipment rentals free of charge. In fact, it was more a “help yourself” system.  We saw stingrays, nurse sharks, a jellyfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, conch, and TONS of starfish!

There were so many activities around the island that kept us busy.  There was snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming in the gorgeous water.  If you enjoy fishing, there were fishing boat tours to fish for bonefish, barracuda, mackerel, wahoo, tarpon, and grouper.  Just a half mile away, and an easy kayak trip, was Man-O-War Caye for those who enjoy birding.  This tiny island is home to pelicans, brown booby, and frigates, and it was fun kayaking around the island to watch them.  There were several tiny islands near Coco Plum as well, so island hopping was another activity to enjoy.  There was a volleyball net in the water to play water volleyball, or just relax with a book in the warm sun.

There were excursions planned on most of the days we were on the island.  You can choose to go on the excursion or stay on the island, but certain excursions were only offered on certain days, so we opted to go on all of them to get the full experience!  We are so glad that we did because we had an amazing time!  We did a couple snorkeling trips to the nearby reef.  A boat brought us out to the reef and back, and we had plenty of time to snorkel amongst colorful fish and coral.  We even saw a manatee pass by!  One of the other excursions took us to the mainland to the jungle to go ziplining and cave tubing!  What an awesome experience!

We went on a river tubing excursion through the jungle as well.  This was fun for me (I grew up going river tubing in Missouri), but maybe not so much fun for my husband, whose tube deflated partway down the river.

We also took an excursion to see the Mayan Ruins.  These were incredible!  We were able to climb up and through parts of them, and learn about the history.

Our excursion tour guide also introduced us to some of the local areas and history of Belize.  We stopped at roadside stands to try local food, drove through the capital, and saw his son’s school.  Our tour guide was also the local DJ, and before one of the excursions we stopped at his little recording studio.  He had me record a commercial for him!  Upon returning to the island that evening, the radio was on in the bar and we got to hear it over the air!  What fun!

Let’s talk food and drink.  While some might like a lot of options, the meal plan on this island was perfect for us, as we did not have to make any decisions!  There was a set menu each day (and they will accommodate for food allergies and preferences) and all we had to do was show up!  Breakfast started at 7:00 am, lunch was at noon, and dinner started at 6:00 pm.  There were snacks in between served at the bar, like freshly made conch fritters… yum! The food was delicious and I never felt like I wanted other options.  The island was mostly all inclusive, so all meals and local drinks (yes, even the alcoholic ones) were included.  Drinks made with imported liquor and wine did cost extra, but were discounted during happy hour each day.

Every night after dinner, the local friendly salt water crocodile, named Winston, would come visit for leftover fish.  It was so funny to watch him, as he would not catch the fish himself, he wanted the workers to catch the fish for him and feed it to him.

Every night there were different activities on the island, whether it be a movie or music and dance.  Or just watching the magnificent sunsets.

We will never forget this incredible trip, and hope to one day return to Coco Plum Island.  To check out trips to Coco Plum, click on their website here:  Coco Plum Cay
